Water is a vital part of life sustenance. In the human body, it makes up 60% of our being. It is a staple resource that all people need in their daily lives. To maintain a healthy body and thus, a healthy life, people need to have clean and safe water.
Having a water filtration system is a great way to maintain sanitation and keep microbes away from your body. Water filtration can be applied in various aspects; may it be personal, industrial, or commercial.
If your business handles the use of water like restaurants or factories producing ice, then water filtration is an integral part of making sure that the water you use for everyday transactions is safe and clean.
Unfiltered water can contain many impurities and chemicals that can be harmful to the human body. Serious diseases can come from drinking dirty water. But by filtering the water, you can remove these impurities while also improving its taste.
With that said, the demand for clean water has never been higher. There was a time when boiling water made it safe for drinking. But that’s not the case anymore.Â
With various natural aspects affecting it like climate change or global warming as well as contaminants contributed by chemicals from factory wastes, boiling water to make it clean is no longer enough to make it safe for consumption.
Benefits of Water Filtration
There are many benefits to using water filtration to ensure the safety and portability of the water you drink and use. In the US there is a Safe Drinking Water Act which assures people that tap water is safe for drinking.
But even with that assurance, you still can’t help but wonder if the water is really safe and completely free from any contaminants. This is why there has been a high demand for water filters in the market today.
Here are some of the benefits of using water filtration in your home and/or business:
Reducing Mineral Content
Minerals like iron, manganese, calcium, and many others are present in unfiltered water. And, although these are not hazardous to the human body when in optimal levels, high-level content of these minerals can cause illnesses.
Not to mention the metallic taste that it contributes to your drinking water. Iron is a mineral known to cause a yellowish discoloration is not only clothing but also basins and plates. While the other minerals tend to cause build up on the pipes over time that can cause a clog.
Removal of Sediments
Unfiltered water can carry a lot of various debris which are called sediments. It can be leaves, dirt, or even small rock particles. Mechanical water filtration at simplest makes use of filter papers to achieve this.
Reducing Chlorine Content
If you want to purify water by killing various microbes like bacteria and viruses, the most inexpensive way to do that is by treating it with chlorine. Although it keeps the water clean and sterile, it gives the water an unpleasant smell and taste.
Not to mention, chlorine when exposed to other metals can react to form dangerous chemicals that can in turn harm the human body. Water filtration ensures that the smell and taste of the water will not have traces of chlorine in it.
Removal of Pathogens
Many water sources especially reservoirs inhabit a lot of microorganisms like bacteria and parasites. A lot of people might not be aware of this but parasites and bacteria are not as harmless as they think.Â
In places that do not have any sources of clean water, many of them get sick from dirty water consumption. Through water filtration, nano-, micro-, and other types of filters can help eliminate these pathogens to make water safe to drink.
Removal of Chemicals and Pesticides
A lot of hype has been placed on going organic. Organic fruits, vegetables, cosmetics, and even pest control. Unlike the earlier version of pesticides where its chemicals are not soluble to water, organic ones easily blend in.
Removal of Lead
It is a well-known fact that lead is a very dangerous metal when ingested. And, this is something you commonly get from old pipes that bring water into your home and establishments. The lead solders used to connect the pipes tend to corrode with time.
With that said, lead contamination happens often. This is why water filtration is important. Many residents suffer from lead poisoning because they are not aware of the dangers of disregarding water filtration.
Types of Water Filters
There are various types of water filters. Although not all of them have significant evidence to prove that they are better from the other types, they each have their advantages.
Depending on your needs and budget, you’ll surely find the right one that fits the bill. Although these methods might differ, it’s important to find the perfect type that can solve your water problems.
Ultraviolet Light
This is a relatively new method that also has a unique charm of its own. Compared to reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light can kill and eliminate microorganisms like bacteria and viruses to stop the spread of infection.
But this technology is not one that can stand alone. You will still need other water filtration methods to remove other particles in the water. This is because the UV light is limited to only eliminating microorganisms.
Reverse Osmosis
Out of all the methods for water filtration, this type is one of the most effective. Although it still lacks a couple of things in terms of eliminating microorganisms, there is no single method that works 100%.
How it works is that water goes into a three-stage filtration process. First, it goes through a sediment pre-filter to take out any debris, dirt, or stone particles. Then, it goes through a carbon filter to remove any organic substances including those that affect the water’s odor and taste.
Lastly, it is forced into a semi-permeable membrane that takes out any chemical substances still contaminating the water. As mentioned earlier, the only downside of this method is its inability to eliminate pathogens.
Carbon Filter
This filtration method makes use of activated carbon. A porous surface helps in adsorbing and trapping microscopic and large particles. It is not more effective than reverse osmosis but it is a great way to remove gases and chemicals like chlorine and lead from your water.
Ion Exchange
The ion exchange method is primarily considered as a pre-filtration method. It works by letting water pass through a resin which contains ions that will be exchanged with ions contained in the water.
It primarily deionizes the water adjusting its acidity/alkalinity level. But like the UV light method, it is not a stand-alone method. Ion exchange does not kill any microorganisms nor does it remove particles in the water.
Mechanical Filtration
This is the most basic type of filtration. You can use paper filters to complete this process. Mechanical water filtration is also used as a pre-filtration method used to filter out any sediments and particles in the dirt that might cause a clog in higher filtration processes.
